The Gruner That Keeps On Giving
I was feeling the need for another Gruner Veltliner and picked one up at K & L about a month ago. I’ve had several over the past couple years and have decided they’re a nice alternative to Sauvignon Blanc when craving a crisp white. This particular beauty was the 2006 Der Pollerhof Gruner Veltliner. 13.5% abv with trocken (dry) on the label. I had 1 1/2 glasses when I opened it to accompany some take-out: a seafood pasta with clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari, and red sauce. While I wasn’t focusing specifically on the flavors at that point, the pairing worked well due to the acidity in the wine and in the tomato sauce. The next day I brought the bottle to the winery to share with my co-workers. All 5 of us had about a half a glass and we all enjoyed it. This time I took notes: aromas of chalk, lemon, and jasmine, while on the palate I found more lemon, honeydew melon, heavy minerality, and freshly mown grass. There was still some left at the end of the day, so I took the remainder to the cellar rat’s and he, BK, and I each had a little with some tasty (i.e. soft and stinky) French cheese. I was wondering how it was that the wine kept on flowing so freely, until I realized it was a liter rather than 750 ml, making it even more of a deal at about $10!
