Thanksgiving Pairing Ideas
It’s that time of year again–the biggest meal of the year. And you can’t have a ton of food on the table without having a lot of wine as well. (At least not at my table…) With so many different flavors going on, I suggest getting several different wines and exploring the pairing possibilities. Here are some ideas to get you started.
How do you cook your turkey? Let me count the ways….
Smoked: 2005 Planchon Zinfandel, 2005Hendry Reserve Zinfandel
Fried: 2005 Aparicio Zinfandel
Roasted: 2006 Contra Costa County Zinfandel, 2005 San Francisco Bay Mourvedre
Rotisserie-style: 2005 Lone Oak Pinot Noir, 2005 Monte Rosso Reserve Zin (as suggested by Bon Appetit)
Spicy (i.e. Cajun/Creole): 2005 North Coast Rosé, 2006 Kathy’s Cuvee Viognier
And now for the sides
Cornbread stuffing: 2006 Kathy’s Cuvee or 2005 Carla’s Zinfandel
Oyster stuffing: 2006 Preston Marsanne, 2006 Rust Ridge Chardonnay
Chorizo stuffing: 2005 Abba Syrah, 2005 England Shaw Syrah, 2005 NC Rosé
Mashed potatoes with gravy: 2005 Lone Oak Pinot, 2004 Holbrook Mitchell Trio
Cranberry sauce: 2005 Richard Sauret Zinfandel
Green bean casserole: 2005 Heritage Clones Petite Sirah
Sweet potatoes: 2005 SF Bay Mourvedre, 2005 Santa Barbara Roussanne
With marshmallows: 2006 Chateau la Paws Côte du Bone Blanc
Breads (buttery biscuits and such): Preston Marsanne
Can’t forget dessert, though you might be eating it the next day
Pumpkin pie: 2005 North Coast Muscat Canelli
Pecan pie: 2004 Zinfandel Port
Sweet potato pie: NV Late-Harvest Viognier
Chocolate (almost anything): 2005 Hendry Zin, 2004 Syrah Port, NV Désirée
The top three choices for being most versatile:
Mourvedre, Marsanne, Rosé
