Reconnecting Over a Bottle of Vino
The best friend arrived yesterday, and after a bit of trouble collecting her at the airport (my sense of direction has never been great, ok?), we picked up a few things at Safeway and went back to my apartment. I already had some lamb marinating in the fridge, and the plan was for salad and stew.
Now, when you’re the wine girl, and friends come to town, you know there’s gonna be lots of wine involved. It’s a given.
Last night was no exception. We’re (ahem, she’s) still recovering. As I cooked, we shared a bottle of Mumm sparkling wine with some tasty double cream Gouda and olives. Somehow, the salad was forgotten. Then we had a bottle of Dynamite Cabernet with the lamb stew because it’s one of her favorites. I even let it slide that it wasn’t the best choice as far as pairing was concerned… a big step for me.
The rest of the evening I’m not supposed to mention. We’ll just say more wine was had, some of which may have been past its prime. And the phone was in use way too late.
My only regret is that our intentions to go wine tasting today were not the best idea. So many wineries, so little desire.

I’ve had very few reunions without wine and the ones that lacked wine were simply because we lacked wine.
My friend has been pouring champagne with Mexican food lately. Sounded weird to me but it seems to go well.

I usually just have beer with Mexican, but sparkling can go with anything. It’s so versatile. And if it had a hint of sweetness– that could counteract the heat of the food.
