Happy birthday, Kel…from me and Sofia

by Farley

In relationships, people have ‘a song’ or restaurant or I don’t know, I’m single and it’s been a while. However, it takes a special friendship, I think, to have ‘a wine.’ Since today is the birthday of one of my best friends, I thought it appropriate to write a review of our wine.

The Coppola ‘Sofia’ Blanc de Blancs was my find, I’m happy to say. On the way to Kelly’s one night with a smoked salmon pizza, I stopped by a favorite wine shop (see MS entry: Briarwood) to get a bottle. Looking for sparkling, as it goes oh-so-well with salmon, the first thing that drew me to the Sofia was the fun pink cellophane that encased the bottle.
Coppola 'Sofia'
The second was the name, as I am a big fan of Lost in Translation and liked The Virgin Suicides as well. Meanwhile…can’t wait to see Marie Antoinette.

We both loved the bubbly. It was fun and refreshing. Later, we would discover the Minis, those enchanting pink cans with straws attached, while visiting New Orleans. Despite their less-than-chilled-ness, we surreptitiously drank two in the car and saved two for later. Since then, they’ve become so popular they even have their own website. I try not to hold it against them they were once on Oprah’s list of favorite things. (Not because I dislike Oprah, I just like to be different.)

Luckily, because I haven’t seen it very often, last week I spotted the Sofia at Safeway ($16.95 with a SW card). Tonight I am drinking it in honor of Kelly’s birthday.

The 2005 seems a little sweeter than the last vintage, reminiscent of a Prosecco. It shows tons of pear, with honeysuckle and other flowers. And I had it with some salmon, because I’m sure Kelly wouldn’t have it any other way.

Love the minis! So much fun! We get our fix nearby at the local World Market. Actually, been a few months so I sure hope they are still carrying them!

Wow, that Sofia gets EVERYTHING, doesn’t she — even her own sparkling. I’m jealous. But hey, I loved Virgin Suicides, too, and can’t wait to see Marie Antoinette either.

Have you been to the Coppola winery? I undestand they have a movie memorabilia room with items from the Godfather and other FFC movies.

[...] The first wine I tried is already dear to me. The Coppola ‘Sofia’ Blanc de Blancs is one of my favorite sparkling wines. (See previous post.) It’s happy and easy to drink with its citrus, apple, and pear flavors. But what could be more fun than putting it in a pink can and attaching a straw? Perfect to take on a picnic or on a romantic walk down a beach. I highly recommend buying yourself a Sofia Mini 4 pack for around $12 at Bevmo. [...]
