Half Moon Bay: More than Just Fish

by Farley

La NebbiaMonday I finally made it to La Nebbia on Highway 92, nestled among Christmas tree farms and garden supplies. It’s one of the wineries closest to where I work, and visitors are always asking for suggestions as to their next stop. As Half Moon Bay is a quaint little coastal town, people love to go there. So, it was about time. I met BK outside the tasting room and was surprised to find that it’s open 10-5, daily. For those wanting to get an early start, I suppose. While the room itself is small, it was welcoming, with a short bar, big window, and wall full of goodies–almost enticing me to buy a champagne stopper except A) I already have one and B) sparkling wine is usually the one bottle I have no problem getting through.

La Nebbia sources all the grapes from other vineyards, as they have none of their own. They purchase bulk wines for bottling themselves and also for allowing people to bring in empty bottles on designated Saturdays to be filled for less than $5. Around for 30+ years, the current owner bought the winery about three years ago and decided to switch the name from Obester. Old habits are hard to break, though, cause I still hear it called by the original name.

We tasted through everything on the menu, including some of the bulk Barbera they get from Mendocino. I’d have to say the Sangiovese was my favorite of the day, although maybe that would have been different had the Lake County Sauvignon Blanc not been sold out. I also liked the Port, which I’m pretty sure comes from the same place in Amador as the Fogarty Port. One of my least favorites was the Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (grapes from Cinnabar), but I’m not sure it was the wine itself or that particular bottle.

With a stop at the much-talked-about Barbara’s Fishtrap, it was a great way to spend a beautiful day before heading into work.

La Nebbia,

Ah! Half Moon Bay! I remember my days going offshore fishing for rockfish from there. Misty, foggy and charming.
