CHIANTI/ SANGIOVESE WINES

Carpineto Chianti Classico, Tuscany 1997

Condensed nose of cherry, rose pedal, vanillin. Strait forward and vibrant fruitiness. Buxom dried cherries and really ripe berry flavors. Medium-bodied with very little tannin in this new-world, stylish and very modern Chianti Classico. 88/100. Opici Imports. $16. -CG

Celli Sangiovese di Romagna 1997

Just go buy the Riserva “Le Grillaie”. Ripe berry, brown spice and pumpkin seed in the nose. Decent amount of cherry fruit, medium ripe with tart acidity finishing up the palate. Decent quaffer at a reasonable price. (better than most $10 Tuscan Sangiovese), But when its all said and done, spend the extra $2 and buy the Riserva.78/100.$10. Imported by the hip people of Aria Imports, Inc. Eugene, Oregon.-CG

Celli Le Grillaie Sangiovese di Romagna Riserva 1995

Good semi-saturated ruby color. Very pleasurable nose of violets, orange peel, licorice and bing cherry, surrounding a plum core. Note…Smells more expensive than $12. First sip……Immediately smooth with it’s acid nicely balanced (bottle age is good!). Full cherry and licorice on palate, very little oak influence, develops nicely with a finish of light tannin and oak. Impressive table wine. 85/100 $12. Imported by the hip people of Aria Imports, Inc. Eugene, Oregon.-CG

Enzo Tiezzi Brunello di Montalcino 1990

A full nose of bottled aged Brunello with cherries, vanilla bean, licorice, tobacco and a slight V.A. quality, not to a flaw though. This Sangiovese was drinking superb with flavors of plum, cherries, tar, orange peel and approachable tannin. Enough tannin to go for five more years, but why? If you have it in your cellar enjoy it, it took a couple hours to come around. 89/100. $30 (1996) Note: Enzo Tiezzi was the Guiding Enologist for San Leonino(Chianti), Tenuta Trerose(Vino Nobile) and Val Di Suga (Brunello).-CG
