Call for Favorite Wine Suggestions

by

The end of the year is approaching quickly and with holidays and such will be here before we know it.

I plan to compile a list of the most delicious & interesting wines and would love some help. If you’ve had a bottle in the last 11 months that stands out in your mind, or if you have one in the next few weeks that knocks your socks off, let me know! Tell me what it is and why it spoke to you. You can add a comment here or contact me directly.

Wine Spectator has already released their Top 100, and I promise mine will not be that long and will include wines that you can actually find and, more importantly, afford.

    Farley,

Thanks for the recommendation on the quail pairing. I should drink more pinot noirs and now you’ve inspired me to do so!

In terms of favorite wines, one of the best I’ve had this past year is the 2001 Pine Ridge Cabernet Rutherford. It was smooth with a slightly spicy-tannic edge. And it tasted damn good and paired well with our food. That’s enough for me!

    Keep on truckin’…

Both my top wines are sweet, which says something about the need for sweetening in my year! Chambers Rutherglen Muscadelle for winter and Chambers Walnut Muscat for summer. I loved the Walnut Muscat so much that I emailed Chambers to tell them and their newsletter person got a recipe from me for the newsletter *and* suggested I try freezing the wine. It comes out as a rather unusual granita and is wonderful in summer with a fruit platter. My father would have been very upset with me if he knew I froze good wine, but I only do it occasionally, truly. :)

I don’t know what Chambers’ wines cost outside this region, but I can buy them for $16-30 bottle.

I’m going to have to stick with my favorite orange muscat dessert wine here. Electra by Quady isn’t as sweet as his other dessert wines, but the result is so much more satisfying to the palate. I could drink a whole bottle by myself…which is a very rare occurence.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. When I get the whole thing done, you’ll definitely be included.

My favorite wine is Pinot Grigio, SANTA MARGHERITA. I wish I had a bottle right now! : )

  6. Christina Says:

Our favorite wine this year is Sacred Stone

We asked Cost Plus to order us a case! It is terrific on the budget for dinner parties and sparks a few conversations… It’s a regular old dinner wine, but with so many dimensions…

  7. Allison Boyer Says:

For us east-coasters, sweet fruits wines are totally awesome this year. Of course, I have to give a plug for the winery where I work, Benigna’s Creek (www.bcwinery.com)–especially because their Strawberry Wine won a double gold medal and their Blueberry won a gold in PA and a silver in the finger lakes region contest in NY.

Another sweet fruit wine that’s amazing is called Orange Blossom and is made by Heritage Winery, which is near Erie.

  8. Jill Says:

I have to support Sonoma County, as I’m a resident. Korbel Blanc de Noirs and Sebastiani Cabernet.

    Jill
