Blind Tasting: Sauvignon Blanc & Chenin Blanc
I haven’t reported on our Rosenblum after-work study group in a while. Back in October, we met for our first blind varietal tasting. Grape of choice: Sauvignon Blanc or Chenin Blanc. And I have to say, we got our egos bruised a bit.
Wine 1: daybright, grapefruit, apple, grass, pepper, lemon, stone…thought it was New Zealand, tunred out to be Chile: 2004 Killer Bee Sauv Blanc from Maipo Valley
Wine 2: bright and youthful, lemon, pear, lime, somewhat spicy, with creamy lemon custard, so def. some oak…thought Sonoma Fume Blanc….actually 2006 Chenin Blanc from South Africa
Wine 3: passion fruit, key lime, pear, grapefruit, straw, minerality…surely this is New Zealand….but no, it’s French– 2006 Domaine du Tremblay Quincy (SB)
Wine 4: petrol, lemon, chalk, green apples, minerals…has to be Old World and French, not Sauv Blanc… well, finally right 2005 La Craie Vouvray (Chenin)
Wine 5: darker but less viscous, peach, apricot, banana, baking spices, pineapple, minerality, some oak…I suprised everyone with this wine made in Montana (!) the 2006 Ten Spoon Blind Curve Sauv Blanc with grapes from Lake County
Wine 6:very light, passion fruit, grapefruit, lemongrass, freshly cut grass, steely…dare we suggest New Zealand again after being foiled before?…yes, 2006 Kathy Lynsbey SB from Marlborough
Wine 7: honey, plastic, varnish, banana, peach…older, New World Sauvignon/Semillon blend? yes, yes, no: 2004 South African Black Rock Chenin/Chardonnay, Viognier blend
Hmm, seems we need more practice.

That looks like fun, I need to start doing that because I am sure I will have a bruised ego as well.
Are you guys listening to each others descriptions before you make your choices or are you doing it independently. It may influence you perception if people are talking and stuff.
Well practice makes perfect, and this practice isn’t half bad.
